Return of the watermills?

Up until the late forties when the electricity grid was upgraded to a national system and started to reach outlying rural areas, watermills were commonplace in many villages and towns across the UK where the giant water wheels generated electricity for the local population.

hydroblog20101120New government incentives look set to reverse the trend, by encouraging local communities to upgrade derelict watermills to mini hydroelectric plants.

Climate change minister Greg Barker says ‘our rivers and streams are a great untapped source of power and could generate as much electricity as a nuclear power station.’

Hydroelectric power has many advantages over other renewable energy sources as water flows tend to be constant and predictable unlike solar and wind power that can change in an instant.  Hyrdo also has the highest efficiency and capacity factor of all renewable energies.
