Largest farm-based solar PV at Glastonbury

Worthy Farm, famous for the Glastonbury festival recently installed a huge 200kWp system on the roof of the 'Mootel'; the cattle shed that house the farms' cows during the festival and farmers from across the UK are arriving in droves for their "Farming Futures workshop" to see what all the fuss is about.

solarblog20101020Hailed as the future of farm diversification, the solar PV array is the largest on any farm in the country the photovoltaic system will generate each year enough electricity to power the equivalent of 40 homes which will initially supply power to the farm, and any surplus back to the national grid.

Although Solar barns are relatively common across Europe, the UK is catching up fast with twice as many farmers generating renewable energy than last year due to the recent feed in tariff introduced by the government.
Paul Cottington, environment adviser for National Farmers Union of England and Wales commented "South West farmers are at the forefront of the renewable energy agenda in the UK and solar PV is a positive business opportunity. We've had an unprecedented volume of interest in this issue, and are helping farmers understand the benefits and risks of entering into contracts with developers. It's an area where professional advice is essential."
There are currently over 100 planning applications for solar PV schemes in Cornwall alone which mirrors the excitement in farming circles of the new incentives.
