British Gas is putting up its energy prices by 7% in December for 8 million customers, and Scottish and Southern and EDF have already increased their prices.
Where British Gas goes, the other energy providers are expected to follow.
The increases are likely to translate into a £78 bill increase at a time that it's reported that over half of UK residents are worried about being able to afford rising energy bills, according to the consumer site Which.
Customers are being urged to take advantage of competitive tariffs by shopping around for better deals in their area.
