Free Solar PV panels?

There are an increasing number of companies willing to install solar panels to your house so long as you fit their criteria which usually requires you to be located in certain parts of the country, have a south-facing roof with an area above a certain size and not overlooked by other buildings or trees.

Important information you should be aware of.
If you take the offer of a 'free' solar voltaic system, it is usually the installation company which owns the equipment and therefore benefits from the Feed In Tariff, by selling the electricity generated by it to the utility company. Home owners should perhaps think twice before committing to these schemes.

It may be a more attractive option for you to take out a long term loan, or remortgage. You will then benefit from the Feed In Tariff, rather than the installer - and you could use the money generated to more than cover the loan/mortgage payments, so it will cost you nothing in real terms.

Recent research by the consumer affairs group Which showed that households could save over £10,000 by installing their own panels rather than "renting their roofs"
