How wind turbines work
Wind turbines capture some of the energy in the wind that moves around your property or land.
Wind turbines and micro-wind turbines are best positioned above all obstacles immediately surrounding the property or in clear passageway that the wind reliably takes. Densely populated urban areas are usually a less efficient site for wind turbines as surrounding buildings and features limit the speed and force of the airflow.
The large blades on the Wind turbine catch the wind and rotate. This movement is amplified with a gearbox and then used to turn a turbine, which in turn generates electricity that can feed into your mains supply, power specific appliances or be stored in batteries for later use.
Most household wind turbines generate direct current and require an inverter to convert it to alternating current suitable for the home.
